Fatal collision turtle by moped in Opende (gr.)

This afternoon we received a call on the emergency line from a lady who was making a bike ride and saw how 2 guys on mopeds in front of her hit "something" on the path and then drove on.... not noticed? It turned out to be a roaming turtle...

Mrs. stayed with the still alive turtle but unfortunately we were half an hour away because we were at another report. On the navigation we could see that Animal Center of Friesland was nearby, Martine then drove directly to the notification to provide first aid.

The poor animal died soon after arrival but fortunately not alone. Mrs. had only a wet washcloth with her next to her bike which she has placed over her. We picked up the animal at Dierencentrum Friesland.

Martine and finder, thank you for helping

And yes: of course this animal should not have been here. That is not the fault of the one who hit her but of the one who did not take his/her responsibility and kept her as a pet. Every year, hundreds of turtles are released into the wild when people are tired of them....

Rest in Peace unknown turtle
