Don't buy turtles...

Together with the Muskus and Florida turtle, the Sawback turtle is currently the species that you can buy everywhere.
Where in the past the red and yellow cheeks (now invasive species) were purchased en masse as impulse purchase and then dumped again, the sawback is now especially the victim of the sale in pet shops throughout the country. In addition, it is also the kind that ALSO goes back into the ditch.
Each turtle in an aquarium makes a lot of mess, costs a lot of money in electricity, for example. Just think of lamps, heating and pumps and certainly with the current prices that will only get higher. About 25 years old you can let everything burn and clean 12 to 14 hours a day, to watch an animal. Because turtles are not cuddly.
Many children are looking forward to it after a few weeks and just like a rabbit, guinea pig or hamster it is soon nothing more.... The impulse purchase can in this case often go nowhere and still it is thought that you can just give your turtle the freedom in any Dutch ditch.
The government applies a so-called extinction policy when it comes to turtles dumped in our wildlife. Nice easy, just leave it because then they will die by themselves and there are no costs. "And eventually all the dumped turtles will die, because they can not reproduce anyway" is what the government thinks... However, time is ticking as global warming continues steadily.
In terms of animal welfare, this is barbaric!
In addition, turtles continue to be sold en masse and thus continue to be dumped. As long as the ALL sale of aquatic turtles does not stop, the problem will NEVER stop. But try to get that done as selfless shelter as long as there is so much economic interest that does not give a damn about animal welfare.
The proof can be found in our largest turtle shelter in the Netherlands; A few years ago, these species barely came in and now there are mass dead-sick sawbacks and musks coming in from the ditch. Most of these are already so ill that we cannot get them better.
It is terrible animal suffering.
The only way we can stop this suffering is by making it visible. But especially by continuing to explain why you should not participate in aquatic turtles as a pet. Without demand, there is no supply. Be the wisest, as cute as those animals the size of a 2 euro coin are when you walk past such a sales tray.... just like puppies and all other animals they do not stay that way. #buy no turtles
Below is a deadly sick sawback that has been picked up today by the animal ambulance and we will fight to patch it up again. The next 10 saw ridges have already been purchased today.......
